Tire or Tyre Training

Tyre training can build strength and explosive power or simply add variety to your functional training workouts.

Ok, just to clarify, here in Australia, this is how we spell ‘tyre.’ In North America, ‘tire’ is the preferred spelling.

Benefits of tyre training

A good tyre training workout is both challenging and fun. It will test your strength, power, endurance, and coordination.

All you need is a used car, truck, bus, or tractor tyre. It is probably one of the cheapest (in most cases free) and also underrated pieces of fitness equipment.

You’ll be surprised by the number of exercises and workout variations that this one piece of equipment can offer.

Anybody can do tyre training regardless of your level of athletic ability. The strength and conditioning benefits of tyre training can help improve your overall fitness and enhance your performance in all sports.

You may have seen those strongman competitions where they pick up a huge tyre at one end and then flip it over. Tyre flips require both strength and power. So training with tyres is not only reserved for strongman competitors but also the home fitness warrior.

If you have the room at home, try getting two to three different size tyres. A large truck, bus or tractor tyre, a 4WD tyre, and a standard car tyre.

Truck, bus, or tractor tyre?

For the large tyre, choose a tyre that will be heavy enough to challenge you throughout the workout but at the same time safe to use.

Because of their diameter and weight, these bigger tyres are great for flipping, deadlifts, doing a farmer’s carry, and various team exercises.

Car and 4WD tyres

These small to medium tyres will still provide an effective workout and add a variety of exercises to your workouts. They will also help build your strength and fitness to work your way to bigger size tyres.

Where to get your tyres

Here are some tips on how I found my tyres. Firstly, do an online search for your local car and commercial tyre service centres. Ask if they are throwing out any used tyres. You should be able to get your tyres for next to nothing. Most tyre service places are more than happy for you to pick up their used tyres at no cost.

A car tyre will be the easiest to acquire by going to your local car tyre service centre. Also, ask family and friends if they need to get their car tyres replaced any time soon.

When getting a bigger tyre, best to go to either a truck, bus or tractor service centre.
