There is such a broad range of home gym equipment available, including:
From the cheapest to most expensive, from simplest to most complicated. With such a wide range of options, knowing what equipment to use can get quite confusing.
Your choice of equipment will depend on your goals, whether you would enjoy using it consistently, how much space you have available, and your budget.
The best home gym equipment is the one that you enjoy using and provides the best bang for your buck regarding exercise choices. In addition, the equipment will help you look forward to your workouts, which allows you to train more regularly, enabling you to see results.
Below is a combination of resistance and functional training equipment. This equipment makes up the foundation of my home gym because it’s:
Functional
Most of the functional exercises I perform mimic movement patterns such as squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, rotation and carrying (primal movement patterns) done in everyday life and sports. However, an element of instability can be added to these exercises, helping you focus on balance.
Space-saving
Most of the equipment listed below do not require much space at all. At a minimum, a space of 3 metres (10’) by 3 metres (10’), with a 2.5 metre (8’) ceiling height, will be sufficient for most of the equipment. However, training basic human movements like squats, deadlifts, rows, and presses requires minimum space and equipment.
Affordable
Affordability is what makes the equipment listed here appealing for anyone. If you don’t have any money to start your home gym, no problem, start using your body weight and then gradually add to your collection. You can buy brand new or second-hand equipment, but don’t compromise on safety, and buy the best you can afford.
Versatile
Most of the equipment I use allows me to perform many different exercises. So you can use just one piece of equipment and get a full-body workout.
Some equipment will be easy to use, and some will require more balance, stability, and control. For example, dumbbells and barbells are well balanced and more comfortable to control when performing an exercise. In contrast, sandbag training will require a bit more balance and control.
If you are new to resistance training, start with your body weight and some basic equipment such as a pair of dumbbells.
Your initial goal will be to build strength, fitness, balance, and control.
Having a few pieces of home gym equipment makes the exercise possibilities endless.
There are many places to buy new and used equipment, such as gym equipment stores in your city, online stores, online and local classifieds and garage sales.
It all depends on whether you want to spend money on new or used equipment. I bought some of my new equipment through reputable online stores because I didn’t want to compromise on quality. I also bought some used equipment through my local classifieds and garage sales.
